In my 'Underground' works the London Underground is related to mythological underworlds through the idea of metamorphosis. It becomes an 'other' world. In this series, mainly based on Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' but also on Euripides' 'The Bacchae', Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' , Spenser's "Faerie Queene' and Dante's 'Inferno', it is the forest that is the place of metamorphosis and 'otherness'. The forest/grove/wood in these texts is an uncanny, kinetic, supernatural setting where people are changed. They run wild, are ecstatic, bewitched, destroyed, confused or inspired and my style of painterly 'mess' as well as strange lighting effects demonstrates these states.
