The Shoppers are elderly and isolated women who, like many of my other figures, are struggling along in a barren environment. As well as painting natural wildernesses I put my figures in the impersonal deserts of modern urban life with its nondescript architecture and harsh neon. The smooth, shining surfaces of malls and retail parks are a foil to my dishevelled, though resilient, figures that go through them.
